OBJECTIVE:

I am available for freelance writing or editing, as well as short-term music/composition projects and some multimedia work. I have worked as a technical/instructional writer and as the managing editor of an entertainment periodical. I have written over 400 songs in many different genres. I also write fiction, some of which has been published by small literary magazines. I am skilled at all major word processing applications, as well as in many multi-media/graphics applications, including Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Macromedia Flash and Sound Forge. I also have experience with layout applications such as Adobe InDesign and Quark Xpress.

RECENT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Freelancer:  4/2007–present

I'm the author of a novella, The Salvation of Billy Wayne Carter (Cantarabooks, 2007), and my short stories have appeared in over a dozen literary magazines. In addition to writing fiction, I provide writing/editing services for all types of projects, including catalogs, magazines and books. I've also composed music for documentary films, independent video projects, and live comedy shows.

Instructional Writer:  7/1999–3/2007, Sage Software Healthcare Division, Tampa, FL

Sage Health creates software for the management of physician's offices. I worked with a team that created multimedia presentations for training and marketing purposes. These materials were delivered on CD-ROM or on the web.

When I began a new training project, I researched the material by discussing it with software developers and studying any existing documentation for the software product being trained. I developed a training course for the material, creating story-boards and scripts for voice-over. Next, I would coordinate with a graphic designer to arrange graphics and other design elements for the project. Using my desktop computer, I record audio files for voice over as well as digital video of the software being trained. I edited audio and video files and then hand them off to another member of my team to be placed in a user interface.

Between July 2001 and March 2007, I performed this job from my home in New York, making occasional trips to the home office in Florida.

Managing Editor:  4/1996–12/1998, Southeast Media Corporation, Gainesville, FL

At the time they employed me, this company produced several periodicals that I edited. I was also in charge of coordinating contributors, tracking advertising and supervising production.  Our primary publication was a regional entertainment magazine that was printed monthly. I wrote an editorial column and usually several other articles for each issue. I also did a fair amount of graphic design and page layout for that magazine and other miscellaneous publications produced by the same company.

Miscellaneous Other Work Experience:  5/1987–present

Throughout high school and college, up to 1996 when I began working for Southeast Media Corporation, I worked many part time and temporary jobs, most of which are not relevant toward the type of employment I now seek. However, I will briefly mention them for those that are curious. My previous part-time or brief full-time jobs included: washing dishes, delivering pizza, waiting tables, beekeeping, clerking in a bookstore, answering customer service calls for a catalog company (where I was briefly Customer Service Supervisor), and teaching music/theatre to children in an after-school program.  My temporary jobs have included: power washing beer trucks, folding linens, typing and transcription, working the front desk at a medical clinic, landscaping, and formatting various types of documents in Word or Word Perfect.

I have also written music for and performed in numerous rock bands since about 1987 and continue to do so. I have frequently been in charge of marketing and booking for these bands, with varying degrees of success. These experiences have required me to foster many different types of skills such as graphic design, web-page design, general business administration and diplomacy.
